A devastating maritime disaster off the coast of Djibouti has once again drawn attention to the dangers faced by migrants travelling from the Horn of Africa towards the Arabian Peninsula. According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 139 people died after an overcrowded boat carrying more than 300 migrants capsized during the night of 8–9 October.

The incident occurred near Guhere, north of the coastal town of Obock. At least 82 people survived, while 84 others were reported missing. The figures underline the scale of the tragedy, although the situation remained subject to updates as authorities continued their response.

Many people who undertake this journey are seeking employment, safety or better living conditions. Some leave because of economic hardship, insecurity, drought and other pressures affecting communities in countries such as Ethiopia and Somalia. The route across the Gulf of Aden, however, exposes travellers to overcrowded vessels, dangerous sea conditions, trafficking networks and the risks associated with Yemen's continuing instability.

Humanitarian organisations have called attention to the need for safer migration pathways, effective search-and-rescue operations and stronger action against people-smuggling networks. Rescue efforts can save lives, but the underlying factors that push people towards dangerous journeys are difficult to address without broader cooperation between countries of origin, transit and destination.

The disaster also presents a challenge for international organisations and regional governments working with limited resources to assist survivors, identify victims and provide medical and psychological support.

Beyond the immediate loss of life, the tragedy raises wider questions about displacement, economic opportunity and the protection of vulnerable people moving across international borders.

What to watch: Updates on missing passengers, humanitarian assistance for survivors and regional efforts to improve migrant safety and combat trafficking.
